OBITUARY

AN IMPRESSIVE FUNERAL BURIAL OF MR. E. D. SMITH Ono of the most impressive funeral ceremonies held in Gisborne of recent years was that accorded to the late Mr. E. D. Smith this afternoon. A brief service at Holy Trinity* Church was largely attended by members of the lodges with which the deceased had been associated during a great part of his life, i. id ,'i large number of mourners accompanied the remains to (be cemetery, t Canon Packe conducted a fully choral service at Holy l Trinity Church, and again officiated at the graveside. The Masonic, and Oddfellows organisations were represented in almost, full strength, rind in a number of their respective branches, and the business community was also strongly represented. The pall-bearers were Messrs. R. Robertson, V. Harre and T. Fllery, of the Masonic order. Messrs. G. I). Muirhead and G. Hilton, of the Oddfellows, and Mr. If. Garrett, who was deputed to represent the members of the late Mr. Smith's profession.

Scores of wreaths and floral emblems indicated tho esteem in which the deceased was hehl. and tin) general sympathy for his widow and son. and the neighborhood of the church was crowded with those who desired to pay their resjK>cts. to the. memory of their lato fellow-citizen. At the cemetery, the usual burial service was followed by the Masonic ritual. MRS. MARY A. LESLIE The death occurred yesterday of of Mrs. Mary Alice Leslie, of Sheehan street, widow of tho late Mr. James Leslie, of Patutahi. Mrs. Leslie, who was .")3 years of age, wns the daughter of the fate Mr. and Mrs. Geo. .Blackstock, who were among the early set/lers in the Patutahi area, where the deceased spent most: of her life, for lie; husband also took up a farm in thjt vicinity. She carried on the farm after her husband's death, but thfve years ago came to live in Oisbo/'iie. Three sons arc left to mourn their loss, these being Messrs. .lack, George and William Leslie, all of Gisborne. The interment is to rake place at the Patutahi cemetery to-morrow afternoon.
