GUNBOAT'S EXPLOIT
A YANGTSE INCIDENT HEAVY FIGHTING REPORTED (Elec.Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (United Service.) (Received April 16, 10 a.m.) HONGKONG, April 15. The story of an exploit of the British gunboat Tern, in the upper washes of the Yangtse, is told by a naval wireless message to-day. It appears that owing to heavy fighting 12 miles above Ichang, shipping in the upper reaches was unable to move. The Tern proceeded up the river to effect a release, running a gauntlet of heavy fire. Three ratings were wounded. However, the object was achieved, the Tern returning safely with the vessels. Alarming news from the same sourer indicates that Hunan soldiery is out of hand-and has attacked and looted the Asiatic Petroleum Co.'s installation, and the foreign mission at Ohangteh. Defeated soldiers at Changteh, Hunan province, looted the city and made prisoner of Mr. L. H. Gabb, inspector for the Atlantic Petroleum Co., who was without food or clothing all day, wounding him by a spear thrust in the thigh. The British gunboat was unable to approach the city owing to low water.
