MINISTER ON TOUR

MR. RANSOM AT THAMES (Per Press Association^ WAIHI, this day. The Minister of Public Works, the Hon. E. A. Ransom, who is now touring the Thames electorate, spent the best part of yesterday in YVaihi receiving deputations and inspecting farm lands, including lands locked-up as forestry reserves, which it- is asked should be opened for settlement. On being welcomed by the Mayor, Mr. Wallnutt, Mr. Ransom took deputations, the' first being regarding the provision of relief works for unemployed of Wnihi. The Minister promised to place 20 men at the earliest possible moment. With regard to idle land, the Minister agreed that much of this was suitable for dairying and grazing purposes, and promised to put the matter before his colleagues, the Ministers ol Lands and Forestry, for favorable consideration. Ho also promised backbloj-k farmers that a. vote would bo put on tho next estimates to give improved access to their holdings in the YVaihi aim Whangamata districts. Mr. Ransom, who expressed himself both surprised and pleased with the progress of dairying in these parts, left for Thames late in the afternoon.
