“GO SOUTH, YOUNG MAN”

OLD SLOGAN REVERSED A MINISTER’S ADVICE (Special to the Herald.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. That Southland offered wonderful opportunities for settlement is the strong impression gained by the Hon. 1. M. Wilford on his recent visit to that province. He spoke enthusiastically on this matter to a reporter last evening. “I was particularly struck with the wonderful area of land which will give opportunities for settlement in Southland,” stated the Minister. ‘‘One hears the question raised' as to whether pumice land can be brought into closer settlement. I believe it can be, at a price. From inquiries I have made I believe that if some of the young men of Taranaki, who are trained in butter production, knew, of the arras that can te obtained in Southland, and understood the price they would have to pay. there would bo instead of a drift of southern dairymen to the north, a drift from the Tai’anaki district south. “I am astounded at the price paid for 'dairying land in Southland. When one hears of the returns obtained per cow from some of that Southland dairying country one cannot help coming to the conclusion that the advantages of settlement in Southland are not sufficiently advertised, or sufficiently well known.”
