CONDITIONS IN AUSTRALIA
SIR. A DUCKIIAM'S VIEWS (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Ibis day. Sir Arthur Duckham, chairman of the Economic Commission which recently completed investigations of conditions in Australia, arrived from Sydney by tho Niagara. Though reluctant to discuss the report of the commission, ho said the fact that stood out strikingly was (he wonderful facilities New Zealand possessed for handling its produce, as compared with Australia. He thought Ihe Commonwealth lagged behind the Dominion in that direction. If was apparent that both countries had big futures ahead. There had been remarkable development, and arising out of the commission's mission he Imped trade would be encouraged between both countries and Great Britain. He urged a revision of tariff restrictions in Australia, and said the whole tariff policy of the Commonwealth wants balancing a bit. It is not doing the good if might be for the country. In some cases the tariff should ibe higher in others it should be eliminated, except for revenue-producing purposes.
