COMPARISON OP COSTS (Australian and N.Z. Press Association.) v LONDON, Feb. 9. A suggestion that the wireless license! which at present is 10s annually, should be reduced, prompted the PostmasterGeneral to say that a three days' programme for one penny is cheaper than m any other place in the world where a fee is charged. For instance, South Africa charges 35s for hotels, and for clubs 755; C/echo-SJovakia 225; Denmark 20s; France nil; Germany 245; Holland nil; Hungary 12s; Iceland £os (and where a reduction is contemplated owing to the scarcity of listeners); Italy 15s; Sweden lis; Switzerland 12s; Turkey 60s (plus 25 per centum tax on sets); 'Austria Is 2d per month for listeners with an annual salary below £IOOO, and 4s monthly for those above that salary. In Russia, private listemng_m is not encouraged, and the Soviet prefer communual listening by means of loud speakers in central parts.
