SCIENTIFIC ORGANISATION GENEVA, Dec. 17. Major L. Urwiek, Groat Britain, the new Director of the International In stitute of Scientific Management at Geneva, sneaking on the scientific organisation of industry at a meeting of the International Associations, quoted ar, example of what is possible under the new science. A British motor factory succeeded last year in showing a profit of £1,000,000, although the selling prices of its products were about one-naif ol those prevailing at a period of acute de pression five years ago. The number of employees had beet, trebled, certain fitters who five years ago wore earning the union wage of 56s a week are now earning £IOOO a year and the average earnings throughout the factory were four guineas a week. The management, through knowing how to manage, had changed the entire atmosphere of the works. Apart from the refusal of individual managers to make the necessary changes, there was no practical reason why every factory in Britain should not be running at that speed. Most workers to-dav were thinking in terms of one month ahead; most employers in terms of the interval before the appearance of the next ibalance-sheet. Science, on the n*ber hand, thinks in terms of generations.
