TRANSPORT BOARD
GOVERNMENT'S PROPOSAL (Special to the Herald.) WELLINGTON', this day. The Prime Minister informs your correspondent that the Minister of Transport will lie the Hon. W. A. Veitch, Minister of Labor and Mines, who will continue to hold these portfolios. When he has had time to consider the organisation of' thy new department there will be created a board of transport.
Explaining the purpose of the new organisation, Sir Joseph Ward said it would deal entirely with motor-cars and motor vehicles, but it would not deal with the question of any contributions received by the Main Highways Board, which will remain under the Public Works Department. "It will l»ve to deal with the difficult question of taxation of vehicles, the cost of petrol, and what adjustments are required to enable local bodies to revise, their finances in the event of reductions being made in heavy traffic license fees. While tho matter is one of considerable ißjpoctance, and there is no doubt that a transport board, can do a tremendous amount of useful work under the new arrangement, these questions can receive, closer attention than when their different phases were separately administered." he said.
