SAMOAN CONTROL
REORGANISATION PROPOSED (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. The Prime Minister slated to-day that after consideration by Cabinet of various matters relating to Western Samoa, ineluding the report of the committee of officials which recently inquired into the finances and staff of the Administration, it had. been decided to institute a reorganisation of staff and a simplification of finances) leading it was hoped, to a considerable reduction in expenditure.
Details would be finalised after consultation with the Administrator, and a further statement made. The proposal, However, involved considerable changes in the present, staff, and it was contemplated that in future the staff would be recruited from and assimilated in the New Zealand Public .Service. It had been decided to transfer tiie existing Sarnoan Military Police Force to a civil basis, with a reduction in strength from 74 to 45. and it was intended to reduce the force still further from time to time as events justify itThe native regulations also will be amended to enable the Administrator to appoint district officers to whom may be transferred the powers, inter alia, of the native district council, where the existing council is not functioning satisfactorily.
Chief Judge Woodward, and the Secretary to the administration, Mr. ITntehen, the Treasurer, Mr. Wild, and other senior officials desire transfers to New Zealand after long tfnd honorable connection with the territory, and inquiries are being made as to whether they can bo appointed to vacancies in the Sew Zealand service.
