INVERCARGILL WOOL SALE

DOWNWARD TENDENCY MANY CLIPS TENDER (Per Press Association.) IXVEHCA KG ILL, last night. Tlic Jirst wool sale of the season was opened in Invercargill this evening, 23,000 hales being offered to a full bench of Home, Continental and local buyers. The sale was still in progress at it late hour, and will be concluded to-morrow. As far as tin 1 sale had gone, it was estimated that values, as compared with the Wanganui stile, ruled from par to A per cent. down. Pine wools were in keen demand, and best classes of crossbred sold quite up to expectations, whilst poorer qualities of crossbreds and shabby sorts realised prices in many cases below owners’ ideas of values. The sale, so far, hits been a sound one, without tiny special animation or extreme values. Halfbreds showed a marked decline on the first sale of last year. Hood sound crossbreds came tij) to within a penny of the values at the first stile last year. A large percentage of the offering was classed by buyers as tender and unsound, and on litis account their valuations had to be in keeping with the quality. In the ease of low quality crossbreds, mostly produced bv aged ewes, vendors’ expectations were not realised, but the sale, taken all round, must be considered a very sound one, and shows a handsome return to the wool producers, although j trices have not soared to the extreme values obtaining last year, when Southland had the advantage of the peak prices. Passings were not infrequent, but it is expected that before the buyers leave Invercargill the great bulk of the passed-in lots will be disposed of at the vendors’ requests. range of prices Half-bred.—Super, 22d to 24d ium, 20d to 211(1; interior, I7d to 18 Cl.
