GROWTH OF MOTORING
AN INSPECTOR’S COMMENT (Special to the Herald.) AUCKLAND, this day. “At a. moderate estimate we have at least 16,0C0 motor vehicles on the city streets,” said Mr. G. R. Hogan, chief traffic inspector, of Auckland, at a luncheon given by the Chamber of Commerce yesterday. Mr. Hogan quoted figures showing the remarkable increase in registrations during the last two years, and he also hazarded the opinion that the number of motorists in and about the city would be doubled in five years’ time. An interesting point in the inspector’s address was bis reference to the influence of the moon. “I do not know whether ' it is due to the influence of the lull moon or not,” ho said, “but it is a curious fact that high speeds are generally found about that time. The fact applies equally to men and women motorists.” Mr. Hogan said the off-side rule for motorists was a real life-saver, and ho also impressed upon his hearers the necessity for closer co-operation between pedestrians and motorists, emphasising that foot passengers should not attempt to CTOS') busy thoroughfares at any other angle than a right angle.
