OBITUARY
An active career has been brought to a closo by the death at Waverley of Captain'George Johnston, V.D., at the ago of £0 years. Born in Auckland in 1848 he weiit to Napier in 1854,"and took part in the engagements on the East Coast. Subsequently he. volunteered and took part in the expedition to Taupo. hi 1863 he went to Wanganui, and during the West Coast native troubles served in the famous Kai Iwi troop under Captain John Bryce. In Poverty Bay he saw service as a scout in the Mounted Pities under Colonel Fraser. Later he was a member of the Aramoho Light Horse and Wairoa Light Horse. On the hitter company becoming the Wairoa Mounted Rifles be served as its captain for 10 years, until his retirement to the unattached list, in 1893. During Captain Johnston's residence in the Waverley district he served on many local bodies, including the Patea County Council and Harbor Board! For many years he was closely associated with the dairy industry, peiug one of the founders of the Waverley Dairy Co. and the West CoastRefrigerating Co., tilling the position of chairman of these companies. For a number of years be was a director of the South Tavanaki Shipping Co. and the Waverley Town Hall Co. In 1869 Mr. Johnston married a daughter of the Infce Mr. J. VV. Thurston, of Wanganui. Me is survived by his family of six sons and four daughters.
