THIRD EDITION. GISBORNE HIGH SCHOOL

CONTINUED PROGRESS BREAKING-UP CEREMONY Owing to 11 10 unfavorable weather the breaking-up ceremony'of the Gisborne High School was lie hi in the assembly hull this afternoon. The function was largely attended by parents and friends of the students. .Members of the Board of Governors and the school staff occupied the stage, Air. L. T. Barnard acting as chairman. Referring to the progress made by the school, Mr. Burnard said the annual report, published yesterday, showed tlie good work that had been done towards beautifying the school grounds during the past year. ‘‘The heard has only limited funds,” he added, ‘‘hut it has provided additional playing areas for various sports. Our next task is to raise sufficient money to convert the 2.j acres pit the rear of the building into a girls’ playground. Those who are leaving this school to-day for good I trust will carry with them the habits of this institution, and will always remember that the greatest happiness is derived from hard work.” In concluding his address, Mr. Burnard wished the students a very happy holiday. I rIG lIEII L EA VING CERTIFLCATES The acting rector, Air. E. .1. Wilkes, AI.A., pointed out that owing to the congestion Which had been experienced at evening functions, it. was decided to hold tin* gathering during the day. Mr. Wilkes then referred to the value of the higher leaving certificates which could be gained by a full year’s satisfactory work at the school after passing tlie matriculation examination. Besides marking a distinct forward step in the education of tlie pupil, this .certificate entitled .the possessor to free attendance at university lectures. In this way it was equivalent to a scholarship of considerable monetary value. Mr. Wilkes advised all pupils .who were thinking of university work to take one or two years in the sixtli form' in order to gain the requisite standard for the certificate. To those intending to enter tlie teaching profession the same remark applied. The higher leaving certificate was the highest qualification possible for a p'ro.bationersnlp. Candidates who secured it, if possessed of suitable personality, were practically sure of a position.

‘*Aiany parents are at a loss as to wha’t profession or trade to enter their children into when leaving school,” continued Mr. Wilkes, “and the Education Department has gone to considerable trouble to assist parents in the difficult question of choosing a career.” Mr. Wilkes then produced a number of official pamphlets; entitled “Vocational Guidance,” which were later distributed aiming the parents present. , The prizes Were then presented by Mrs. L.
