POPULARISING CLASSICAL MUSIC

Arrangements are being made by tho .manager"of the New South [Wiles Broadcasting Co. to popularise music of the ! high standard generally heard at firstclass concerts at the Town Hall or the iConservatorium. Hitherto a diversified j programme has been given nightly from 2FC add 2BL, As both stations are now under the one management it is possible to have classical music at one Station and ; a popular programme at the other. The ' first of these classical nights will be from 2FO this month. Listeners will be told that night that if they, are not in a , temperamental mood to appreciate first - : class music— vocal and. instrumental—(hey should at once tune in to 2BL, where, popular songs, selections, and sketches will be featured. The experiment is an interesting and novel one in Australia, ft has been tried with success and satisfaction in Britain, where the 8.T5.C, by.a judicious selection of musical programmes, has educated the public taste to such an extent that more serious music is now in vogue than was the case a few years'ago, when jazz music attained a temporary popularity owing to the desire of the great masses of the people to have relaxation from thtj seriousness of tho war years and those following the, armistice.
