LAND LINE RELAYS

l\ During the past month the New South . ! Wales Broadcasting Co. organised a I number of land line relays primarily for ; the purpose of ; giving listeners the opportunity of hearing programmes provided by provincial artists, but also to Jest the reliability of land lines for transmissions to relay stations should these be established in local centres throughout New South Wales. On the whole the land line transmissions were not up to expectations. On different occasions the accompanying noises were so great as to preclude tlft possibility of comfortable or satisfactory reception. The matter is being investigated by the engineers of the Post Oilice Department, • but no means have been found as yet for removing the noises caused by induction when distant relays are. sent over land lines. Meanwhile an interesting cxpeni ment is being tried in the relay of programmes from different Australian stai tions, and from stations in other countries, by short-wave radio. On Wednesday night 2FO pukon the air a, musical programme relayed by short-wave from • the Java station through the receiving station of A.W.A. at La Perouse, The relayed programme was as a whole muclr ■ better than'the best land line relay yet transmitted from 2FC. This points to tl'ic possibility of national programmes henlg provided for Commonwealth listeners from Sydney or. Melbourne by shortwave radio. Tito, experiments,, are being continued to scientifically test the possibilities .of the short-wave radio station in'this direction. There will bo a number of reciprocal relays for testing purposes, between 2FO and 3LO. 2FO is also including in its shortwave relays ■programmes from broadcasti Dig stations in Schenectady (New York), ,)nva: JJapaV Russia and Holland. These ! relays will be on Wednesday nights, and j (he 'station iiiur hour will be announced ■in (he broadcast programmes for that I dav. ' -' ■-■■
