ROWING

G.R.C. SECOND FOURS FORBES WINS THE FINAL Rowing on dead water last- evening, with plenty of depth beneath the boats. G. Forbes' crew won the final race in the Gisborne Rowing Club's second trial fours series. The series has been a good one, and but for a mishap in the losing boat- last evening the final would have been one. of the finest races of the season to date. The crews were evenly matched, as the course of the race showed, and bad they got oil to ail even start, they would have been hard to separate. The contesting crews were : G. Forbes (str.). Coates, J. Morrison and A. Ball, and 11. C. Eraser (str.), G. Ball, J. R, Shaw and B. LeCompte. Forbes had the weightier four, and throughout the series had shown a great lift in the boat at the catch; these features proved advantageous to him under the conditions, and Eraser's disadvantages were added to by a bad start. Forbes went away with it, rush, and rapidly went away from his opponent, having a length's advantage at the Bullancc street- bridge. Thereafter, the race, developed into a stern chase, with the leaders in the position of being able to watch their pursuers, and match their every effort. Eraser had no chance to draw level, and there was half a, length of clear water between the. boats at ihe. finish. The crews are now in training for the Christmas fours, which are to be l'owcd on a three-quarter-mile course, on the VVaimata River. In order to ensure that this series will be disposed of well before Christmas, the races will, be Commenced on Monday? the contesting cretvs racing up the'river in the early stages of the. heats, in order to get the benefit of the current. The training period [or this set of fours is very short, but most oarsmen are making good progress with their training, and the course is no longer than that of the last series. Nominations for the holiday doubles will, close shortly, this being "a doublesculiing event which the club will'decide on Hie first suitable tide in January.
