COUNTY ENGINEER'S REPORT (Herald Correspondent.) At the last meeting of the Wairoa County Council the engineer, Mr. A. G. Smith, reported : "Horseshoe deviation: This contract has now been completed. Hincksman's bridge: Fair progress is being made with this work and the contractor expects to complete the 'bridge, before Christmas. Formation Waikatea road: This contract- is just on completion. Metalling Browjilie's road: Good progress has been made with this work and the contract is just on completion. Metalling on Mangapoike, Maromauku, and Ruiowhangi roads: Fair progress is being made with the work on these contracts, the one contractor having the three on hand. Ruarakaipurara road: This contract has been completed. Kua-papa-Waikaretaheke road: Fair progress is being made with this work, the same contractor having contract No. 472, which he has not commenced workon. Mahia road : Fair progress is being made with the. metalling on thih road. Mohaka, Putere and Putere settlement roads: The contractor has commenced the metalling on the Mohaka-Putere road, and is stripping metal of metalling on Putere settlement road. Metalling on Ohuka branch and Matukuhia road: The contractor has made a good start with this work and a fair-class of "metal is being obtained from the bed of the Mangaruhe stream. "Metalling on Ruakituri, Waimana. and Erepeti roads: Ellison Bros., the contractors for these, two contracts, expect to be shifting the crushing plant from Te Reinga to the. Upper Ruakituri to crush metal for these two works shortly. Metalling on Mangaone road : The contractor was to start, work on this contract yesterday, quarrying and knapping stone. Metalling Rotokakarangu road: No work has been carried out on tins contract and I do not expect a start will be made until after Christmas. Metalling on Maraetaha, and Maraenui roads: The contractor has commenced quarrying and knapping stone to carry out this work. Metalling on Waingoro, Iwitea and Nuhaka station roads: Tho hauling of metal for theseroads is being carried out 'by the council's motor lorries and: on Iwitea road, after being delivered at Tuhara station yard by the Public Works. Department. Metalling on Ruafaniwha, AwamateandRotokakarangu roads: No work has been carried out on these contracts, and it is not likely work will be started untilafter the Christmas Holidays. Napier-Gisborne, via Morere: General surface and power grader work has been carried cut over the entire length. Lorries delivered maintenance metal on the different sections. The. highway is in good order. Wairoa-Gisborne, via Hangaroa : General surface work has been carried out over the entire length. Lorries delivered maintenance metal on the Frasertown and Lower Ruakituri sections. The hbdiwav is in good order. Ruakituri Valley Road: General surface work has been carried out by the surfacemen. Power grader graded in the recently laid maintenance coat on the Te Reinga-Doughboy length. The

highway is in fairly good order. Mangatawa Bridge: All materials .for the erection of this bridge will be to hand this month and the contractor is commencing work immediately after Christmas. Waikatuku (Whakaki) Bridge: The plans for this bridge have been returned approved by the Main Highways Board. Awamate Road, access to llamoto: Plans and specifications have been completed for the formation of 43 chains of this road and forwarded to the, Public Works Department for approval. Tahaenui Valley Road: Plans and specifications have been completed for the formation of 67 chains of this road and forwarded to the Public Works Department for approval. Waihua Valley Road: A Survey has been made for the formation of 40 chains of this road and the plans are in hand. The usual maintenance, repairing bridges and renewing culverts has been carried out.
