TAKINGS IMPROVE FARMERS HAVE MORE MONEY (Special to ttw» Herald.) OHRISTCHURCH, this day. Business is better. The commercial world to-day is cheerful. Managers of large businesses smile and talk of takings that continue to improve with each month. Jewellers, drapers, and nurserymen all tell the same tale. A good indication of the spending power of the people i.s provided by the results of the winter sales, and a reporter who sought information on this question to-day received replies, all of which struck the cheerful note.

Maid the manager of one large drapery firm: "The sale this year is much better than that of last year." "There is more cash about," said another. "Business is good on the whole and is very solid and consistently even. 'People are buying better stuff. We have sold a lot of unusual stuff as well. People, however, are more careful in buying apparel. They will not pay big prices like they would at one time. Competition is keen and the merchandise is lmich.lj.eiter. A member of a very well-known jewellery business said that with the exception of one month, every month in the past 12 has shown better returns than, the previous 12. "We sold two diamond wristlet watches last week," he said. "We hardly expect to sell more than one in six months. People are buying the better class of goods." "The farmers are finding that they have more money and are buying things that they have not been able to purchase for the last two or three years," said an officer in the State Forest Service. "Sales are very much heavier this year than ever before up to this month. This was anticipated and prepared for. The reason people are buying more trees is because this is the best year we have had for many years. The farmers have more money and the work of the service officers is beginning to show results."
