Air. C. Fraricis Jenkins, the Unitedi States inventor of a system of-.telcvision. } has recently curried out a number.. of experiments' with a receiver which will facilitate the- reception of televi'sioii j pictures now being experimentally transmitted' from AVGY Schenectady, by DlVj Alexanderson, the radio engineer of thsf -General- Electric Company. Under ther Jenkins invention tho current- ffom the, radio set. instead of operating a .loud speaker, causes a glow of a small metal plate sealed in a bulb containing the rave gas neon. According to a description of a demonstration by .Science Service, .Mr. je'ufcnte uses ro<fe. of qmutitV' through which light is passed in much the same manner as water through a sieve. Tims' he is able f<>. substitute a seven-inch drum for the three-foot; .disc, that previous' methods 'of television ire> eeption employed! A helical "row of small holes in tho revolving drum are connected by quartz rods; about two inches long." somewhat resembling the* spokes of. a bicycle wheel, to £»<? neon lamp. The drum is spun' af 3600 revolutions per minute. The light from" ■the neon lamp, is carried by the quartr. rods round the surface of the revolving drum, which, with the'aid of a slant" mirror and magnifying lens permits the picture to be seen vertically as, on a movie screen. In the experiments to date, the picture is thrown on the screen bv the television apparatus in silhouette, 'bid Mr. Jenkins states that he is hopeful of perfecting the apparatus to enable light and sJiade to- be shown on the tscreen," and thus have pictures of the same perfections as the cinema. |
