The. closing of the Cancer Conference was signalised by the .sole Australian contribution, and also experts refutation of the common beliet that Jewish people were comparatively immune from cancer owing to their hygienic principles.

Dr. Sourasky, a. Jewish practitioner in London, quoted statistics of five of the principal cities of Kttrope, proving tli.it, cancer among Jews and non-Jews was approximately equal wherever the conditions were similar.

Dr. L. M. McKiilop, of Queensland, said that the cancer death rate in the Commonwealth was only one in 43 in 1885, It was one in nine m ,1525, and it was estimated it would reach one m live within 30 or 40 years at the present alarming rate of progress. An analysis of the Commonwealth figures showed that, with the exception of Victoria, Queensland showed the greatest incidence of the disease. Moreover, there was a distinct tendency to attack young people. Sir (Jeorge Buchanan, of the Minisfry of Health, commented on the .steadily increasing mortality from cancer in Fngland and Wales, in 1875 there were only 445 deaths pur million of the population. In 1905 this had increased to 069 per million, and the figures were now 1375 per million. Notwithstanding improved surgery, anaestheti.es, pathology, and radiology, the number of cancer deaths per hundred worked out a.f : Australia 11, and England and Wales only .13.
