ANGLING IN TONGARIRO

ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT An expert angler, commenting in Wartganui on the report of a great run of fish in the Tongariro River, states that, generally speaking, the fishing m that river last year was not good. No doubt this was" due to the tact that the river untiL the recent high flood had not been lower for many years, and the fish which had collected in large numbers at the delta of the stream would not move upstream until a "fresh" came.

"It is possible there will be a big run of fish before the end Of the month, if the water conditions are suitable," be said, " but even this is only a conjecture." The angler considers that the Tongariro strai)u could be improved. In places the scrub had been cut down when it should 1 have been left to provide shelter, by overhanging the banks, for fish underneath. The matter of access and the providing of more fishing waters should be dealt with at once.

A Wanganui resident considers that the Government .should obtain the advice of anglers who have fished in the Tongariro stream regularly for years. He mentions Mr. R.. L. Begg, of Wanganui, and Mr. G. A. Neilson, of Gisborne, as practical advisers.
