OBITUARY

MR. J. W. WHITE (Per Press Association.) TIMARU, this day. The death has occurred of Air. John William White, for 54 years Crown Prosecutor at Timaru, aged 90 years. MR. M. DOWNEY. The death occurred in (Jpotiki of a well-known resident in the person of Mr Michael Downey, ,1.1'., at the age of 73 years. Deceased had been suffering for a long time from a severe illness. The late Mr Downey was born at Belfast in 1854 and went to India , witli bis parents at an early age. Later Uio family left Burmuh for New Zealand, arriving at Auckland on January 17, 1864, on the ship Light Brigade. The parents settled at Taurauga, but deceased went to Opotiki, arriving there about 60 years ago. Tlie late Mr Downey was engaged in teaching schools on the Coast for many years, being in charge of the lliruharama school, East Coast, and later at Te Araroa. lie retired from the latter school about 1918. On his retireament deceased settled at Opotiki, where he resided until the time of his death. For 40 years Mr. Downie was a licensed interpreter. Ho was one of the original trustees of the Mechanics’ Institute and Library in Opotiki ancl reappointed on his retirement. from school-teaching. Mr. Downey Mas also at one period secretary of the Free Masons’ lodge in Olpotiki. Deceased was greatly respected by .Europeans and Maoris throughout the Opotiki and East, Coast districts. lie is survived by- his widow, four sons, six daughters and 18 grandchildren.— I lunnlian.
