WAIROA COUNTY COUNCIL

(Herald Correspondent.) The Wairoa County Council met yesterday. Present: Crs. W. Jj Hill (acting chairman), G. C. Ormond, D. D. Pryde, R. Mclntyre, A. T. Carroil, and F. H. Norris. . The chairman reported the advisability of holding over the motion imposing a speed limit of 30 miles per hour on county roads, seeing that the matter might }>e dealt with in a Bill coming before Parliament.

The application of Mr M. B. Svenson, Government contractor, for permission to take a 13-ton tractor along the NapicrWairoa road, was granted.

Tlie council received notification of tJio cancellation of the following grant balances: Waikokopu stream bridge, £77 11s 6d; Waimaunu bridge, £57 Ids 3d. —These sums represent savings on tho estimates.

The resident engineer approved of the council’s proposals for the delivery of metal on Rnataniwha road and Waingoro road.—The council gave tho required undertaking to keep the road up to the standard brought about by the grant. Letters in regard t () Crown lands were received from the Commissioner of Crown Lands, Gisborne, and the Crown law officer. The latter now admitted that tho Crown was liable for the payment, of special rates on lands which had reverted to the Crown after the imposition of such rates. A fresh chum is to be made.

The Hawke’s Lay County Council wrote advising that it was unable to carry out work on the Wait a re-Const road,' as desired by Mr. W. Reeves, a ratepayer in that county.—The chairman said they should press for this work in order to help in taking the travelling stock off the main highway. Hawke's Bay also should provide a stock paddock in that area.—A copy of the reply is to be sent to Cr. J. Tait.

The Hospital Board notified the levy for maintenance at £2173 13s 3d, there being no capital expenditure proposed.— The chairman and other councillors thought more energy should be displayed in collecting patients’ fees.—Cr. Pryde: Hawke’s Bay gave a rebate for prompt payment. / The health inspector presented a clean bill of health for the county as regards infectious disease. , Messrs. W. McCulloch' and C. E. Conn (Tukemokihi station) wrote stating that unless the Styx creek bridge was repaired it. would have to he closed.— It was decided to reply that as the bridge was not on a county road it could not be repaired by the council, but in any Case the Public Works Department- had the matter in hand. Mr. Dyson, district engineer, Taurnnga, wrote stating that the total length of the Waimnnn-Ituakituri road was 71 miles, of which 27 had been formed and partly metalled, 13 miles formed as a bridle track only, and 31 miles untouched.—Councillors considered this was too big a job for the Government to undertake at present, and no action was taken. The usual £4O bursary vote for the Wairoa District High School was made. On the. suggestion of Cr. Carroll, it was decided to erect danger signals at each end of the three Tnr : roa cuttings and to limit the speed there to 15 miles per hour. The clerk was instructed to obtain quotations for a portable weighing machine for the use of the traffic inspector. The Dairy Factory Co. was granted the use of Die chambers for meetings in common with other county bodies.
