MAINTENANCE PROBLEM GOVERNMENT TAKES OVER (Special to the Herald.) OPOTIKI, this day. Recently the Hon. K. S. Williams. Minister of Public Works, visited Opotiki. Representations wore made by the council and Gponae settlers that the Government should take over ' the Matawai-Opotiki road. A letter has been received from the Minister as follows: “Referring to the representations made by your council in respect to the Government taking over the maintenance of the Matawai-Opotiki road in the Opotiki County, 1 have carefully considered this matter and am agreeable to take over, at nnyrato for the present, the responsibility for the maintenance of this road from the entrance of the gorge at the Opotiki end to Matawai, leaving the Opotiki end of the road for the attention of your council. The necessary instructions have been issued to the district engineer at Tauranga. He will intimate to you the point of the road from which he will assume responsibility for maintenance.” The contents of the letter have caused great satisfaction in Opotiki. The new arrangement '/ill greatly relieve the burden imposed on Oponae and Matawai settlers.
