TREE PLANTING
GISBORNE (VI0.) GIVES FINE EXAMPLE. At intervals only too rare throughout Victoria (says the Age) tree planting has been practised to it most, commendable extent, in the majority of cases the tree planting was performed by a bygone generation. Amongst tin; noticeaide examples of afforestation rank Lismoje, Inglewood, and Alexander, but in no ’town of the State can anything better he seen than the avenue from Gisborne to New Gisborne (railway station), a. distance of two miles. This avenue consists almost wholly of English oaks, with an occasional silver oak, and is a perfect picture during the foliage season. Every street has its row of trees, its weil as the golf links, public gardens, and indeed wherever trees can be plant - ed. The shire council and progress association are following the good example set by the older generation, and wherever a tree has failed the blank has been filled in. English trees are the popular fancy in Gisborne. Local enthusiasts declare, that Gisborne can show oaks and' elms at least equal to any of their kind in Australia, The claim is a bold one, but an inspection of the magnificent specimens of trees, although just now bare of foliage, confirms the opinion that the challenge is not rash. Driving along the main avenue and admiring the splendid results of tree planting in Gisborne, one thought forces itself upon the traveller. Tlte shire councils of the Malice should visit, Gisborne in spring, and emulate the example in afforestation.
