WAIROA FIRE STATION
THE OmCIAE OPEHINO (Herald Correspondent.) In the presence of a considerable number of people interested iu the work of the Wairua .Fire Brigade, the new station was formally opened by the Mayor, Mr. J- Corkill. The Mayor said the lire station was a step forward. from the makeshifts of earlier days. Then they had few tires, but latterly they had had them somewhat. frequently, and- there being no fire-lighting appliances, the people turned out for a holiday till morning!. With the advance in budding things were not satisfactory, and the local authority had to go forward, but it was no use forming a brigade until they had a highpressure water supply. They now bad it pressure of 1201bs. to the square men. Thirteen months ago the Fire Board! was -formed, and as- the preliminary work was heavy, he thought‘rapid progress had been made. Mr. Oorkill stated the costs as follows: Building loan, £2200-, land, £150; building contract, £1098; motor. £652; equipment, £530; svren, £55. They now had an efficient brigade, which was entitled to all the help the townspeople could give. Mr. J. W. Norrie, of Napier, said ho could not agree with the Mayor that in the past there had not been many fires. Tile station should have been built and equipped long ago. • All agreed That since the brigade had got to work it had already saved the expense of establishment.
The Mayor moved a vote of thanks to the contractor' and architect,' Messrs. Glengarry and Batclitfe, and this was carried by acclamation. k The Mayor added that the brigade had now been out 14 times, and the cost of being able lo do so was us follows: Borough Council, £280; insurance companies, £280; Government (as a maximum), £SO. Messrs. J. S. Black and W. A. Neale also spoke,After a demonstration by the brigade, Air. Corki.ll started the syren and formally declared the building open.
