ON A SOFT WICKET

NEW ZEALAND V. SCOTLAND HOME SIDE MAKES 233 VISITORS TWO FOR SO. (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Aasn.) (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.} (Received June 25, noon.). . LONDON, June 24. The New Zealanders began a match against Scotland at Glasgow today, but unfortunately for a two-days' match rain delayed th& start, and the wicket was soft.

Kerr, one of 'Scotland's foremost bats, was nm out cheaply, but Stevenson and Groves added 63 for the second wicket in 35 minutes. The former played a good innings of 59, and most of the rest met with some success, but on the whole' the batting was dull. At lunch the score was two wickets for 100. Then five wickets fell, for another ICO, and the total only -reached 233. The home side were helped by the'bad fielding, for the New Zealahders had- another, relapse and miased several easy chances. Oh the t>ther hand, Page bowled splendidly, and came out with an excellent analysis. Merritt was very expensive, and evidently the wicket did not suit him. On going in for New Zealand, Bernau and Oliver began briskly and put on 59. Both of them- were caught cU Forrester, but James and Dempster were still together when stumps were i drawn, with the total at two wickets for SO. A RECORD TOTAL \ J If the number of runs scored *in .a game of cricket can be taken as the criterion of the entertainment provided —and there are others more fallible—■ then the drawn game between the New Zealanders and the,M.C.C. was one of the best ever played (says an Ehslsh authority). The two sides between them made 1503 runs for 28 wickets. According to Wisden's Almanac, which cannot lie, the previous record for a three days' match stood to the credit of Worcestershire and Oxford University, who in 1904 collected 1492 at Oxforxt
