DUTY ON SPIRITS
m> AN INCREASE EXPECTED (Special to the Herald.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. Not only whisky, but other classes of spirits as well are being cleared from bond in anticipation of heavier duties being imposed by Parliament as a result of the expected recommendations by the Tariff Commißsron. There also appears to : be an expectation of an increased tariff for tobacco other than cigarettes, judged on reports of clearances. Information on the subject is not obtainable from the Customs Department, but its returns of the net Customs duty collected in Christehurch for the three weeks ended June 23, while not different iatine . between spirits mid tobacco and other merchandise, are significant. Here they are: Net Customs . duties, for. June, first week; £8671 13s 9d; second week £1&.258 13s 8d: third week £47,163 1 9s, 9d ; ' total, £75.094 7s 2d. .' - , The movement to clear bonds of spirits set in during, the second week of the month and developed strongly in the third. What assists the deduct ibn that the big figures for the second and third weeks. are due to clearance from bonds ik the fact that there has been very little overseas shipping.'
