WOMEN AND PANTALOONS

INNOVATION IN SYDNEY. # SYDNEY, June 2. Two or three very courageous women, falling into lino with a fashion which, it is said, has been the vogue on the Continent for some time, appeared at an important function in Sydney a night or two ago in pantaloons. According to a woman journalist, they wore "shortfrocks of taffeta, the bouffant skirts being out above the kneo with a transparent hem-line of tulle, through which pantaloons of taffeta to match the frocks were clearly visible.'' The same writer observes thai, while the pantaloon leaves much to be desired in gracefulness, it would seem to indicate a, definite step toward the adoption of trousers by women. "The transparent hem," she .adds, "which in most cases falls from the knees to just above the ankles is probably a concession to the last remaining remnant of what our grandmothers' styled maidenly modesty, and will possibly disappear as the season advances."' At another social function girls selling novelties produced an unusual elfoct by wearing blue and gold ribbon anklets as distinguishing badges. To read at tho same time of an old-fashioned waltz competition at one of these functions, Suggests something incongruous. One woman, at least, in Sydney affects a monocle; she is an enthusiastic patron of the turf, and is a, constant visitor to Randwick.
