RAILWAY CONTROVERSY
SOUTH ISLAND MAIN TRUNK The annual controversy over the respective merits oi Ihe wesl and east coast railway routes led to a three hours' discussion at the conference of South Island progress leagues in Christchurch. Mr. I!. I l '. Coulter (.Marlborough) moved: That this conference emphasises the importance of completing the New Zealand main trunk railways in the South Island between Parnassus and Wharanui. and (hat. m the..meantime the survey of this gaji be accelerated. 'the remit was supported by the Marlborough delegates, , but opposed strongly by Nelson, who urged the completion of the West Coast gap. The chairman suggested that alternative proposals be discussed in committee and (his was done for two hours. Tho Marlborough remit was then carried. 'the following Nelson remit was confirmed : That the railway from Stanhope to Murchison be completed as speedily as possible.
