Gisbornites visiting Napier this week included Messrs. P. Harris, ft.. Gamp,bell, and P». H. Aislabie. Dr. Richmond Hooper, of Palmerston North, is at present studying at Guy's Hospital, London. Mi;. Mr. Boillieu, a geologist attached to U}e Anglo-Porsion Oil Co., who has been in the Poverty Ray district for some time, left Gisborne yesterday to join the Corinthic en route to London.
Mr. W. B. Miller, an American oil geologist who vvas well-known in Gisborne ' a short time ago, has advised friends hero that ho is now managing an American oil company at Caracas, Venezuela, South America,. Since the last general election Col. Allen Bell, M.P., lias travelled 4580 miles over his electorate, visiting remote; settlers in almost every nook and corner in it, and personally inspecting toads for which tho settlers had made application for Government assistance. Mr. Sydney Jacobs, formerly of Wellington, has resumed his duties as a director of Joseph Nathan and Co., London, after six months' recuperation in the Riviera, following a long illness. Advices received by mail indicate thai his health has greatly improved. Tho official advice of his appointment as official assignee in Auckland has been received by Mr. G. N. Morris, who has been acting in the position, since the retirement of Mr. W. S. Fisher last year. Mr. Morris, who has boon in the Government service for 24 years, was a. former Resident Commissioner at Nine Island.
t'nloncl Allisler Smith, of tho Salvation Army, who has been engaged upon mission work amongst the South Al'rican natives for some years, has arrived in New Zealand. Colonel Smith is a much-travelled man, as he has represented General Jipoth in over 40 different countries". He has come upon a lecturing tour concerning his work amongst the .natives of South Africa, and will probably remain in the Dominion about a month. The delegation appointed by the Xcw Zealand branch of the Institute of Pacific Relations to attend the conference to lie held at Honolulu in July, is now completed. .It consists of: Dr. P. H. Buck, of Auckland (who is going to join the staff of the liishop Museum, Honolulu); Mr. .1. s. Straclian. M.A., Kangioi'ftj Mr. VV. 11. Cocker, IS.A., land: Mr. VV. Nash (secretary New Zealand Labor Party); and Itev. W. Mawson, of Auckland', for many years,a missionary in China..
