MAKURA'S LEAK
TO DOCK AT AUCKLAND It was decided by the Union Steam Ship Co. on Tuesday to dispatch their R.M.S. Makura from Wellington to Auckland, where she will go into the Calliope dock for a thorough examination to ascertain the full extent of the damage to her hull and to have repairs effected, It is expected that the vessel will-be in dock for two or three days, and on being refloated she will leave Auckland for Rarotonga, Papeete, and San Francisco. Those passengers who were to join the Makura at Wellington will be sent to Auckland by train to embark there.
The damage received by the Makura while pounding in heavy seas during the run across from Sydney, was found to have resulted from the loosening of some rivets, The' full extent of the damage could ,not lie discovered, but judging by the amount of water entering the lower compartment of No. 1 hold it was evident that the leakage was relatively slight. Temporary repairs are being effected to enable the ship to proceed to Auckland. „ ,?■;>.
