Burt (Christen ureh), became unmanageable and went over a precipitous bank of the Grey river near Brunner yesterday afternoon. The car rolled over several times, throwing its occupants out, before it reached the water's edge. Both men sustained minor injuries, but suffered from shock. The Arbitration Court was engaged in Palmerston -North on Tuesday and yesterday morning in hearing an application by tho flaxmill employees for an increase in wages. The flaxmillers not only opposed the increase, but sought a "reduction on the present rates, pleading the poverty of the industry. Evidence was brought forward to show that while tho overhead charges had increased, production had decreased, that the men were already earning high wages, and production had been retarded through the men not working full time. The employees offered -to co-operate with the. millers in the taking of tallies upon, which tho Court could fix wages, but the millers were not inclined to accept, fearing the men Would go slow. This was ponied by the workers' adS'Ocate, who stated that as a further safeguard the men, if granted an increase, were prepared to accept an award of ,12 months' duration only in order to try out the, how rate. Tho Court reserved its decision.
