BRIEF LIBERTY

PRISONER ESCAPES (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, last night. William Thomas, who is serving a sentence of two years' imprisonment for theft, and Lawrence Burton, who is serving one year for the same offence, escaped from Rangipo prison camp at 2.30 pan. on Sunday last, and had their freedom until yesterday afternoon, when they were re-captur-ed near Oruauui by Constable McMullen, of Taupo, and Warders T. Banks and J. McKenzie, of the Hautu prison camp. After leaving the camp, the prisoners attempted to cross the Kaimanawa ranges, intending to reach Napier. The very rough conditions compelled them to return to the level country, and by following Ihe Waimarino Stream down from the ranges they came out on the Tokaaiiu road. Warder T. Banks, who is in charge of the Hautu camp, and Warder' J* McKenzie came upon the. prisoners' tracks early yesterday morning, tracing them to Waitnhanui, 10 miles from Taupo. Constable Mc.MuUen joined the warders, and they then continued the search. From information received from Oruanui, describing two men making toward Hamilton and answering the description of the escapees, the warders and Constable Mi-Mullen ran their quarry to earth in an unoccupied bouse" on the Taupo side of Oruanui. The men surrendered quietly.
