CHRISTCHURCH UNEMPLOYMENT (Special to the Herald.) CfIItLSTOHUROH, this day. " The present unemployment situation in Christchureh is the worst for 20 years," remarked Mr. Ellis, secretary of the Canterbury Freezing Workers' Union, to-day. " I am convinced that if it is to be. dealt with effectively a large scheme of relief work will have to be prepared without delay." .Mr. Ellis stated that within the past six weeks over 1 SCO men had been tin own out of employment through the freezing works closing down. Work would have to be found: for these men to tide them over the winter months.
" There is an urgent need for a city improvement rate," he said, " and if such a rate is struck up to £SOOO or £IO,OOO, it will help materially to solvo the problem of unemployment this winter."
