MIDNIGHT RAMBLER
MYSTERIOUS SOMNAMBULIST (Special to the Herald.) AUCKLAND, this day. The mysterious midnight wandering of a woman wearing only a nightdress startled people in 'Symonds street on Sunday night. After rambling about in her sleep for a time she disappeared, cold and wet, down a right-of-way. Yesterday inquiries were made at the house where it was thought she went, but the owners said they knew nothing of the woman and her. strange movements. Nobody knows who she is. When the roaming figure was first seen it was followed by several men and a woman into Princes street. Then it went back into Symonds street, made a detour of a vacant section through the long .wet grass, and wandered on through the drenching rain, ignoring everybody.
Those following were afraid to wake the woman. Somebody got in touch with the police, and two constables arrived, but they, tqo, thought it inadvisable to wake the sleep-walker. At last, when the sleeper got to tlip top of Constitution Hill she was asked by one of the men where she was going. She switched round, and walking at double her original puce made up Symonds street again. . She had gone only a short way when she tinned into a right-of-way, and disappeared. One of the policemen followed her, while the other tried to wake the people of the house, but could not rouse them. Soon the other policeman came back and announced that she was bask in bed, the occupant of the, house having assured him that all was well.
Wljen inquiries were made yesterday at the house where it was thought the woman entered, the owners said ho lady had left the house during the night. The landlady was indignant .that anyone should have visited her house in search of a woman who had wandered in her sleep. ________
