GREAT DISPLAY PLANNED

POVERTY BAY COURT AT AUCKLAND WINTER SHOW Realising that they have the material at their disposal >to make a splendid display with the Poverty Bay court at the Auckland Winter Show, which is to open on July 21, the Poverty Bay Winter Show Association is making every endeavor to arrange the exhibit in such a manner as to secure the desired result, that of winning the silver shield, which is the award for th? best district court at the show.

Poverty Bay will have five other districts to compete against in Thames, Pukekohe, Onehunga, Te Kuiti, and Taumarunui, and it is expected that with a close adherence to the scale of points sot out in the schedule Poverty Bay may come out on top. The court at Auckland will be entirely different to that shown at Gisborne at the last Winter Show. The Auckland effort will be about twice the size, 30ft. by 12ft., and will coutain not only the pick of the material shown in the court at Gisbome, but also the prize-winning exhibits in the remainder of the show. In addition, other exhibits are being arranged for, so that a court twice the size of that at Gisbome will be occupied with objects both of merit in the matter- of points-gaining, and of interest and advertising value to the district. ADVERTISING YALtTE - Mr. G. Darton is in charge of all the arrangements,.and .to assist hini he 5s obtaining the help of experts.in their own particular spheres. Mr. Darton has planned out the court-ion paper and has arranged the large number of exhibits in a manner pleasing to the eye, and also with'due regard to their importance in the matter of points-getting. So as to give prominence to the exhibits it has been arranged that the baek wall will have a white background, while the remainder of the display will have a black background.

In order that the court will be of r real advertising vahie to the district, a practical and experienced farmer in the person of Mr. F. Woodbury will be in charge of the display throughout the duration of the show so as to give any information in connection with the district's possibilities. Other officials to be present are Messrs Darton and A. Thompson. The plan drawn out by Mr. Darton shows that, the centrepiece of the back wall will be used as a display for trophies, among which will be a the finest stag's head shot in the distriet, a 22 pointer brought down recently by s Sergeant. Wade. The remainder of the back wall will be occupied with pictures of agricultural, pastoral and scenie interest. A prominent place also will be taken up with two large cases showing the results of printing and book-binding industries at the office of the Poverty Bay Herald. The main centrepiece of the whole display will be taken up in exhibiting the pig-raising and attendant industries, a feature of this being a whole pig cured and smoked, and standing in a natural position. This will be flanked on either side with hams and rolls of bacon, while in the front will be dishes of fresh meat, fish and game. On one side of this will be a table of bread and . cakes, while on the other will be a similar table of fancy sweets. SOME FINE EXHIBITS A large space will be provided for fiuit, the best the district can grow. One of the principal exhibits will be that of dairy produce. In vegetables and root crops Poverty Bay should more than hold its own with any "other district in the Dominion, and in this respect all the pri2e-winning exhibits at the last show at Gisborne will be available, with the addition of very many more line specimens. Wool and hides will have reserved for them a large space, and the district, is fortunate in having works catering for the subsidiary industries dependent upon pastoral pursuits, that of preserved meats, and of these each variety will be represented.. The Gisborne court has always made a feature of preserves and jellies,- and for the court an extra

fine collection has been arranged.. Manufactured goods, for which 3i» points are allowed in the schedule, are allotted a large space, and some particularly fine displays are included. In this respect the Gisborne business firms have given liberal support, and all of the exhibits offered are of merit. The most outstanding ere the work of the Gisborne Leatberics and of the district brickworks, while Messrs J. J. Niven and Co. are loaning a machine for printing names on boxes, such as butter boxes and cheese crates. v Gisborne is renowned for the class of poultry it breeds and four crates of live birds, which have already gained New Zealand championships, should create great interest on the show board at Auckland. The Poverty Bay Poultry, Pigeon and Cage Bird Association is co-operatirig to get the exhibit to Auckland. In its attempt to advertise the district, per medium of tho court, the association has arranged with Mr. R. J. Kerridge for a collection of splendid views of the tourist routes in the district served from Gisborne. .In addition, a large map, covering, at least 18 square feet, will be placed in front of the court, showing tho various traffic routes in an endeavor to impress upon the uninitiated the fact that Gisborne is no longer isolated and does not depend solely upon the sea for its access.

Probably one of the outstanding features will be n beautiful exhibit of Maori mats and curios, which are being arranged for by Messrs W. J. Hall arid W. Pitt, of Pntutahi. As there are oO points allotted for general appearance, this important aspect is not being neglected, and a pleasing effect is being aimed at. FINANCE It is anticipated that £IOO will be required to assemble' the district court. The Auckland, Winter Show Association is contributing f. r »0 towards the , expenses, in addition- to paying the freight upon the material sent to Auckland, but despite that the other costs will be heavy. About £'M towards , these expenses is in sight, and it is considered that a further good, response will be ™mMMM !_l ' L' BBgg
