MAGISTRATE AT WAIROA

CASES DEALT WITH YESTERDAY

At the Magistrate’s Court in ..Wairoa. yesterday the following cases were disposed of bv Mr. E. 0. Levvey:— James Moran was «(jh urged (1) with having been drunk while in charge of a motor lorry near Turiroa on May (V and (2) with having driven a motor lorry without having a motor •driver’s license. Defendant pleaded guilty to both charges. His Worship said that in Gisborne lie was sending such men as defendant to gaol, but in the present case Moran would bo fined .£ls, with costs Ids, and the license (since taken out) cancelled for two years. On the second charge accused was ordered to pay easts oilv, 10s.

Kiel Thompson was charged Unit on April 28 he used a motor loiq-v on a county road without having first obtained a heavy traffic license. After T. O. Browne, traffic inspector for the Wairoa County Council, had given evidence His Worship fined defendant £2, with costs £1 11s. Jeremiah Cahill, for drunkenness, was convicted and fined 10s. O. Te Kahika was charged flint on April 18 he committed a break of Ids prohibition order. A plea of gully was put in. Fined £l, with costs Ids. For having been found on licensed premises during the currency of life order he was ordered to pay 10s costs.

T. Dillon, who did not appear, was charged that on May 30, during the currency of his prohibition order, he procured liquor. Fined £5, with costs 10s.

Ora Te Ngaio was fined £2 and costs 15s for permitting a bull to wander on the Nuliaka town roads. Watene Wininta tv as charged with having on September 7, 1920, signed a receipt for £0 11s 9d without affixing the necessary duty stamps. Defendant pleaded guilty. Sergeant Wade said that defendant was contracting for the Public Works Department; he left the stamping to the Public Works Department, and out of thousands of vouchers this was the only one missed. In view of the fact that this was an old case His Worship ordered the payment of 10s only.. Jimmy Cart was charged with having on April 19 assaulted Matthew Donaldson in the Nuliaka bus. Ac-cused-pleaded .guilty and was finqd £2, being given seven days in which to pay. Karauna Whaknmoa. was charged (1) that oil May 7 he was drunk, and (2) that on the same date he used obscene language in a picture hall at Nuliaka. He pleaded guilty to both charges. Sergeant 3\ ado stated that the town was divided by the river, and the young Maoris took advantage of the police being on one side to Carry qn their pranks on the other side" while under the influence of liquor. An example was much needed. Fined £5 on each charge, with costs 15s in each instance, in default two months’ imprisonment. His Worship intimated that the next offender would go to gaolMatthew Donaldson was charged with having used obscene language in the Wairoa-Nuhaka bus on April 19. He pleaded not guilty. Jimmy Canstated that the language was used. Corroborative evidence was given by Toro Waerea and Nigel Boyd (the driver of the bus). At the close of the ease for the prosecution, Mr. Jones, for accused, withdrew the plea or not/ guilty and asked for leniency, as there were no women in the bus. Fined £3, with costs £2 9s.
