MELBOURNE’S CRACKSMEN
AMATEURS AND PROFESSIONALS,
MELBOURNE, May 2.
There is an epidemic of safe-breaking in Melbourne, and hardly a day passes but a business place in the city or suburbs is entered and the safe blown.
There appears to ho at least two gangs operating. One, in the opinion of the police, consists of amateurs, whoso work is easily recognisable by the amount of gelignite they use and tho wreckage they cause. The' more dangerous gang, however, seems to bo composed of experts, who havo an intricate knowledge of safe-breaking and are possessed of great patience.
Last night this gang must have spent half the night breaking into the premises of Welch, Terrin, and Co. Pty., Ltd., in South Melbourne; but their booty amounted to only 840.
