A conference of representatives ctf counties and motor organisations will be held in Christclmrch this month to discuss what steps shall ho taken to secure the, distribution of the money forming the revenue fund of the South Island Main Highways Board, and to formulate some concrete proposals for the improvement of dominion highways generally. At this conference the "good roads scheme," which has been put forward by the Otago Motor Club will be discussed. in a speech at the installation ceremony in Christclmrch, the Mayor, Rev. J. K. Archer, said: "I wish to express my thanks to the representatives of the press. Those of us in public life owe. a very great deal to representatives of the , press. Often we think they do not give us as full reports as they might give after our brilliant orations —(laughter)—but I can assure you they save us! quite a lot, of criticism of our public speaking. For myself, I have occasionally gone home feeling that I have made a fool of myself, but when I read the newspaper reports in the morning I discover that I have made quite a uood speech." (Laughter).
