FATALITY ON EGMONT
CLIMBERS' TRYING TIME ONE MEMBER KILLED (Per PreM Association.! ItAWERA, this day. Messrs Latham, Raines, and Taylor, teachers nt Wnngahui Cotlogo, and a pupil. Dennis Allen, wore Climbing Mount Egmont last night. After reaching the summit and when on the return trip they slipped on the ice, falling sonic distance. Latham or Buines —it is not certain yet which—v,;is killed, his head being shockingly mutilated. One of the two is still missing, but it is believed that he crawled towards Opunake. One of the party crawled to Mountain House, Dawson Palls, at ll.lf> o'clock last night and gave the alarm. A search party went' out immediately and the bod)' was found about a third of the way between Fantham's Peak and the summit.
Taylor and Allen are safe at Mountain House, suffering from shock, while Taylor is much bruised. Later. The man killed was named Latham. Haines is still missing, but is believed to be alive.
