WAIROA NOTES
A heavy gale- raged all night on Sunday. Tim orchards throughout tins district were practically ruined. Tn town windows were blown in, and our, buildings earned away. Several.verandah roofs were carried away bodily. In the Hopper Shield cricket competition City met Frasertown, and won by three wickets. Scores- City 41 (Butcher and Haynes 8) and 107. Frasertown made 87 (It'. Goldstone 20) and 53. The mortal remains of the late W. 0. Sharpe were laid -to rest in the Wairoa cemetery on Saturday in the presence of ;i number of Hie settlers. . The Rev. ,)'. A. Shardlow, vicar of SI; Paul's, officiated at the church and the graveside. Mrs. Andrews, commissioner and sec rotary of the Girl Guides at Napier, was a visitor to Wairoa at the week-end. Mrs. Mary Scott, widow of the late Mr. M. Scott, who was attached to the troops in tho Wairoa district in the 'sixties and 'seventies, died at Waiftust on Friday at, the age of 97. The deceased, who' had reared a large family, had unusual experiences at the time of the Mohaka. massacre by one of Te Kooti's bands. She brought into the world a son about midnight the evening before the massacre, and as the marauders came down the valley she had to run from near the Mohaka bridge site to llihubarama pa On Sunday the second group enrolment of Girl Guides and Brownies, 15 of the former and 12 of the latter, took place- Miss Fort was also enrolled as local district commissioner. The patrol leader, Miss Irma Wilson, was given her second-class test badge. It is hoped to conduct a District High School excursion to Waikokopu on March 31 if a train can be secured for that date.
The followine are the results of Saturday's plav on the Wairoa bowling n-reen : Osier. Rist, Kendrew", and MacDonald 'l9) defeated RntTierford, Wade. Noble" and Wilson (18); Patterson, Stainnand, McLachlan and Boyd (23) beat Craig. Redmond, 0. Wade, and Harris (14). The Ruakituri school picnic ended successfully, there being a good attendance of pupils and adults.
