A .start was made by the Borough Council this morning with the bitumenising of the Haiti esplanade from the William Pet-tie bridge to Rawiri street. Hie road has been scarified and the bitumen will be laid immediately. H is expected that the work will take four or five days.

A considerable amount of motor traffic passed through Wainui yesterday, the Coast road being a popular one for a Sunday run. Two motorists negotiating the small bridge near Mr, Lysnar’s farm met with an unfortunate mishap, apparently through one of them cutting things too tine. Just across (he bridge the hub of one ear struck the front portion of a new four-seater, which, with a damaged steering gear, bounded into the side of the bridge. Had it, not been for the substantial nature of the railing the car and its occupants certainly would have plunged into the Wainui creek. Both ears were damaged.

.Motorists at present have no difficulty in negotiating the road between Gisborne and Motu, the bad portions near Rakauroa having dried up. The ruts formed by the traffic in the wot weather are very deep, and with the least rain the road wilt again bo difficult to travel over. Motorists complain that there has been no levelling done since the road dried, and sav that if a grader were put on for a few days the load could be put in good order fur traffic. The Coast, roads leave been treated in this manner, and during' the dry weather the mud. road is smooth.

An inquest- into the circumstances surrounding the death of Me.ke Matutaera, 27, better known as “Big Mac,” was opened before the coroner, Mr E. C. Record time was made by the special Sunday train run by the Gisborne Railway Department, from Motuhora, The cKcnrsion was made with the object, of giving the residents at the various places along the line a chance of spending a day at the beaches in Gisborne, and the delightful weather resulted in a large number availing themselves of the opportunity, six coaches being almost, filled, while 70 passengers boarded the train at Motuhora alone.
