ROWING

G.B.C. SECOND TRIALS. Ono of (ho most remarkable series of races since the war was concluded last evening, when W. Dent's crew won the Gisborne Rowing Club's second trial fours final, by a canvas, from G. C. Jones' crew. Of the nine- crews which went to the po§t, six proved to he within a haJf-length of each other, in the matter of pace, and three of the events were decided by margins of inches only. Last night's race was as keen as any of the series, though both crews had undergone .severe tests in winning through to the final. Dent had J. Stewart, W. Grant, and Pocock with him, and Jones was backed by H. Hunter, T. Rowe, and R. Colebourne. The start was marred by the eagerness of both to lose no chances, and it was not until the Ballance street bridge was reached that both crews settled down. By this lime Dent had halt' a length's lead, and lie held! the advantage to the halfway mark, where his opponent challenged and gradually reduced the lead. At the Derby street bridge, Dent still had about a quarter of a length, and a mutual spurt left matters unchanged for a short distance further. Then Jones appeared l to be making aip the balance of his disadvantage, but a slight mishap checked him, and in a hard finish Dent's boat showed a canvas; in the lead. The winners take the C. 0. Dansen medals. FIRST OPEN FOURS. Crews for the first open fours, ' for trophies donated by Mr. J.
