RECLAIMED LAND
.WHANGAREI EXPERIMENT fF*r Freas Association.) WHANGAREI, this day. The Minister of Agriculture, Mr. O. .T. Hawken, yesterday paid a visit of inspection to areas of land reclaimed by means of stop-banking and dredging from the river by the HarborBoard. He gave his opinion that with the natural lime shell deposit, combined with the mixture of clay, the areas should, in i imo, become very fertile. The Government had acquired from the board a small area of five acres for experimental purposes, which were watched with interest. The Government had not undertaken the reclamation of such land up to the present, hut if the experiment was a success there were many thousand acres that could lie. won on the North Auckland tidal frontages. It was stated by Mr. Fraser, engineer to the board, that it had 6000 to 8000 acres that could be reclaimed in territory under the board’s jurisdiction.
