WARM WELCOME

ACCOUNTANTS’ PRESIDENT The Gisborne branch of the Society of Accountants and Accountant- Students gathered last evening to welcome the .president, Mr A. M. Seaman, of Auckland. The function took the form of a supper, at which Mr W. 11. Irvine presided. Introducing the visitor, the chairman expressed the pleasure felt by local members at the visit, and the hope that future presidents would 1 follow the course of becoming personally acquainted with the branches. In reply, Sir Seaman thanked the members! for their warm welcome, and remarked upon how well the Gisborne district- was served by the? motor roads. The isolation formerly spoken of in connection with Gisborne had disappeared. The scenery between Motu and Opotiki was munificent, and if travellers only knew more of it, they would avail themselves of Tie excellent road and! do the trip regularly. (Sneaking of the society and its future, Mr Seaman reminded members that the Act which brought their body into existence was intended primarily to protect tire public, and to ensure as far as possible, through ihr examination of the society, that a competent body of men would be available lo undertake the highly specialised work of accounting. It was the duty of an accountant, once having undertaken work fee a client, to carry it through to the best of his ability, irrespective of anything else. Anything less than complete loyalty to the client would be detrimental to them individually and to the society. The examinations would not, he said, bta made any easier, as the work placed in the hands of the accountant- was becoming more complex. Therefore those who entered the society must be prepared' with a high degree of skill, which thev would require to bring into play when faced with the problems thatmodem business raises. The president was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for bis remarks, and a vote of thanks to the chair concluded the function.
