AMATEUR ATHLETICS

GISBORNE TEAM’S TOUR, H ASTINGS SUCCESSES. (Special to tho herald.) HASTINGS, this day. At the Hastings Amateur Athletic meeting last evening the Gisborne ladies' relay team easily accounted for the opposition, comprising tkreo teams from Hawke's Bay. The visiting team was on the scratch mark, and conceded starts up to 55yds. They gave a brilliant display, and won with something to spare. The early runners of the Gisborne side wiped! out the handicaps, and Miss Eastwood started tho last lap 10yds. ahead of the next competitor. Without being extended, she added 15yds. to her advantage, and the visiting side won by 25yds. The time was 55 2-ssec., and the Gisborne girls received an ovation from tho record crowd which watched the events. In the 50yds. handicap for ladies, the Gisborne girls were giving a lot of ground to the home talent, and though Miss Eastwood and Miss Hansen tied in their heat, they ran unplaced in tho final. Owen Paltvidge, who travels with the team as manager, and who holds the sprint championship of Poverty Bay, took part iu the 100yds. handicap for men, and from scratch won his heat, and finished second in the final, 2ft. behind the winner. The time for both the heat and the final was 10 2-ssec. Considering that tho Gisborne runners had been travelling practically all day, their performances were excellent, and Hastings enthusiasts anticipate they will do well in Wellington, where they compete for the. Eltenevaux Shield, now held by the Wellington ladies’ relay team. On the return trip the Gisborne ladies and Mr. Paltridgo will probably compete in Napier, and a successful meeting is expected.

YANKS MAY STILL COM!

(Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, last night, The Athletic Association lias not given up hope of yet obtaining a visit from some American athletes, Tt is considered that the prohibition by the American authorities will not be held to apply to New Zealand, as no fault lias been found with the conduct of tours here, but on the other hand they have been considered highly satisfactory. Mr. Krogness, New Zealand’s representative, is making further representations, and hopes to have the decision reviewed. It is known Richardson is definitely available, and only one other good man is wanted.
