WAIROA NOTES

(Herald Correspondent..) Mr. Glover, of Clyde road, is undergoing an operation i'or an internal complaint. Mr. Mclndoe, orchard instructor, Gisborne, is inspecting the orchards in this district. He states lie finds the crops light this season. Mrs. Hogg, of Gisborne, is on a holiday visit to her brother, Mr. .Marbrook, of Lahore street. Tho hay harvest is now being gathered, the weather generally being suitable. Tho crop is not as heavy as might be expected in such a favorable season, but most of the paddocks were not closed early enough. A good many of the small “farmers” who make use of the long paddock” are going out ot the cow-keeping business, finding it too expensive and risky without an abundance' of winter fodder. At the usual convent school social the prize-winners were Mrs. Jas. Finucane and Mr. 11. Murdock. The members of the Wairoa Fire Brigade are assiduously practising for the competitions at Hastings on Saturday. The entries are: modern motor event, three men (wet), two men (wet) and a one-man event.

At the meeting of creditors in the bankruptcy estate of J. Webster, builder, the deputy official assignee, Mr. A. 11. H. Unwin, presided, Mr. G. IT. Sainsbury acted for the bankrupt. Messrs. Duley, Harker, Tapper, Ashby, Sargent, Granby and C'o.’ representative, Mr. O’Malley (representing the Wairoa Timber Co.) and E. J. Green were present. The rowing contest for the Svenson Fours was continued on Tuesday evening, when Gilligan (sir.), Grant, McKinnon and Mayo defeated Logan (str.), Lane, Williamson and Simpson by half a canvas after one of the best contests seen on the river. Crawford (str.), Putchett, Scott and Seebeck last evening lost to St-. Paul (str.), Osier, Martin and Taylor. The fitters and mechanics at Tuai defeated at cricket the Tuai Rangers by five wickets. The scores of the winners were 67, and 92 (for four wickets). Reeves scored 08 (not out) in the first innings, and 42 in the second. For the losers the Highest score was Heeney, 20. The shooting competition for the Smith* trophy and the champion belt will be fired this week. Handicaps are: J. McNeill, 31. P. Chapman, F. Chapman, W. Byford and J. Scott (scratch); P. Eddy, R. Yallance and J. Rowling (2), D. Byford (4), T. Crawford, Dunloy and R. Dunbar (8), H. Mayhead arid D. Hagen (10), C. Chapman, B. Halpin (12), A. E. Clough (16), M. Boyo, 0. Bainbridge (18), McErlich and Bird (20). .
