AN UMPIRE KILLED
STRUCK BiT SPECTATOR, NEW YORK, October 27. An over-zealous spectator aroused at wliafc he considered an unfair decision by an umpire at a baseball game in Long Island City Sunday, rushed on the field and struck the umpire. The latter fell, his head striking the hard ground around the home plate. He died a short time later. The assailant escaped during the excitement. The umpire was Patrick McTavey, jnr. He was well known in semi-pro-Tessional baseball circles. The game at which he was officiating was one between the Long Island City Centuries and Cubs, at the Cub’s oval, Hunter's Point avenue and Meadow street.
The Cubs were leading, four to one, in the eighth, when a. member of the Centuries team tried to steal home. When he was called, out by the umpire, an infuriated fan rushed up and slammed the umpire on the jaw. Police are looking for Thomas Carroll, brother of the Centuries’ catcher.
