ARCH OF YPRES
MENIN GATE MEMORIAL . LONDON, Oat, 2. Britain's.war momqrial to the 58,600 men who fell in the Ypres salient and who have no known graves, and were therefore officially -staged to be "missing,"is nearing completion at the Menin Gate, Ypres, Belgium.. It .is hoped that the memorial, which takes, the form of a great archway over the main road out of Ypres* with the 17th-century .ramparts of Old Ypres, on either side*, will be unveiled by the King some time ncjpfc year. The memorial, which was designed by Sir Reginald Blomfield, H.A., .was begun three vears ago. It' is. 130 ft;,. in length weighs 20,000 tons, ,-ind the pediment, of the' arch is : 69ft from the ground. Beneath the/massive stone lion, gazing towards Ypres, is the inscription:— "To the Armies of the'. British limpire who stood here from 19141918, and those of their dead, who have no.kwnyn grave." In Delville Wood, near.Longueval, in the Sommo country, in which one of the fiercest buttles of the war was fought in July, 1916, 'the memorial to the South African troops -who - died in the war is to be unveiled on Sunday) October 3, by the Prime Minister of'South Africa, General Hertzog, who will be in Europe, in connection with the Imperial Conference.
